Loretta Smolenski, a market research manager, died of cancer Feb. 28 at Johns Hopkins Hospital. The Ellicott City resident was 61.

Born Loretta Reddy in Baltimore and raised in the Hunting Ridge neighborhood, she was a 1962 graduate of the Institute of Notre Dame. She earned a bachelor's degree in history from the old St. Joseph's College in Emmitsburg.

In 1985, after raising her son and daughter, she became operations manager of a market research business, Newton-Evans Research Co. in Ellicott City. Family members said she asked her survey respondents to donate their honoraria for survey completions to charities such as the Red Cross and American Cancer Society. They said she was able to raise $43,000 before becoming ill last month.

A community volunteer, she prepared meals weekly for Our Daily Bread.

A funeral Mass was offered Friday at the Roman Catholic Church of the Resurrection, where she taught Sunday school for 13 years.

Survivors include her husband of nearly 38 years, Jack Smolenski, who trains security personnel for Abacus Corp.; a son, Mark Joseph Smolenski of Bel Air; a daughter, Judith M. Sieg of Ocean Pines; two brothers, Richard Reddy of Forest Hill and Jerome Reddy of Baltimore; a sister, Nancy Sanders of Sparks; and two grandsons.
