Gennaro Chiapparelli, 72, gym teacher

Gennaro "Jerry" Chiapparelli, a retired Baltimore County public schools gym teacher and sports coach, died of Alzheimer's disease complications Feb. 26 at an assisted-living facility in Bakersfield, Calif. He was 72.

Born and raised in the Little Italy section of Baltimore, Mr. Chiapparelli was a graduate of Patterson Park High School. After serving in the Navy, he attended and played football at the University of Alabama, graduating in 1962.

That fall, he began a 20-year teaching career, first at Dundalk High School and then for the bulk of his career at Perry Hall High School. He coached wrestling and football.

Mr. Chiapparelli was inducted into Perry Hall High's sports Hall of Fame in 2003.

When Mr. Chiapparelli's two sons went on to wrestle at the University of Iowa, he followed them there. He moved back to Perry Hall in 1986, remaining until he moved to California two years ago.

Services will be held at 2:15 p.m. today at the Joseph N. Zannino Jr. Funeral Home, 263 S. Conkling St. in Baltimore.

Mr. Chiapparelli is survived by his sons, Louis R. Chiapparelli of Bakersfield, Calif., and Rico Chiapparelli of Los Angeles; his mother, Matilda V. Chiapparelli of Baltimore; a sister, Caroline Gramil of Timonium; a brother, Richard Chiapparelli of Baltimore; two granddaughters; and a great-grandson.
