1911: St. Charles seminary burns

On March 16, 1911, a fire destroyed St. Charles College, a Catholic seminary about five miles west of Ellicott City. According to B.H. Shipley Jr.'s history of the Ellicott City Fire Department, "The students and nuns who lived in the wings of the main building managed to thorw their belongings out of the windows, but the priests were less fortunate, having lost nearly everything they owned." Also lost were almost 20,000 volumes from the college's two libraries.
