McGinnis assigned to aircraft carrier

Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Michael J. McGinnis is in the middle of a deployment in support of the war on terrorism while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, based in Norfolk, Va.

McGinnis' unit conducted more than 4,000 sorties and provided surveillance, reconnaissance and close air support to ground forces in Iraq.

The Theodore Roosevelt Carrier Strike Group participated in maritime security operations and Operation Steel Curtain, which provided aerial support for U.S. Marine and Iraqi forces and prevented insurgents from entering Iraq through the Syrian border.

He is the son of Danny McGinnis of Westminster. He joined the Navy in December 2002.

Portney is made seaman apprentice

Navy Seaman Apprentice Kyle L. Portney was recently promoted to his current rank upon graduation from recruit training at Recruit Training Command, Great Lakes, Ill.

Portney received the early promotion for outstanding performance during all phases of his training.

He is the son of Deborah L. and Michael L. Portney of Westminster and a 2005 graduate of North Carroll High School.

Yelton completes Marine Corps course

Marine Corps Pfc. Travis J. Yelton recently completed the Marine Corps Enlisted Warehouse Basic Course.

The course at Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools Training Command, Camp Lejeune, N.C., gives students a comprehensive theoretical and practical background in the performance and administration of duties as a warehouse clerk.

He is the son of Wanda J. Bennett of Westminster and Ronald D. Yelton of Hanover, Pa., and a 2005 graduate of Winters Mill High School. He joined the Marine Corps in June 2005.

Bromwell completes Corps supply course

Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Tila B. Bromwell recently completed the Marine Corps Basic Enlisted Supply Course with Marine Corps Combat Service Support Schools Training Command, Camp Lejeune, N.C.

Students learn to use supply publications and catalogs, general accounting, and the basics of naval correspondence.

She is the daughter of Lori L. and Abdullah Assgari of Finksburg. The 2004 graduate of Westminster High School joined the Marine Corps in March 2005.
