COLLEGE PARK -- North Carroll (37 points) holds the second-place spot, the highest among Baltimore-area Class 4A-3A schools, after the quarterfinals at the Maryland state wrestling tournament yesterday at Cole Field House.

LaPlata (44 points) is the leader, with local schools Broadneck (tied for fifth place, 28 points), Arundel (eighth, 25 points), Old Mill (ninth, 24 points), and River Hill (10th, 22 1/2 points) also placing in the top 10.

North Carroll placed three wrestlers into today's semifinals -- Jeremy Seipp (103 pounds), Tom Goretsas (125) and Tyler Macleod (140).

Arundel's Justin Bowser, the defending state champion at 125 pounds, easily advanced in his first two matches. The senior, ranked first in the state by the Maryland State Wrestling Association, pinned Dundalk's Tyrone King 2:31 into their first-round match, then pinned Damascus' Keith Obendorfer 2:27 into their quarterfinal match. Bowser will face Goretsas in the semifinals.

Old Mill's Greg Saumenig (112) and River Hill's Taylor Green (152), both state runners-up last year, easily won their two matches. Saumenig will face Northwest of Montgomery County's Sean McCarty in the semifinals, and Green will face Broadneck's Xavier Rathlev.

Helen Maroulis (112) of Montgomery County's Magruder became the first girl to win a match at the state tournament when Chesapeake-Anne Arundel's Jarrid Bosque -- a fourth-place finisher at the same weight last year -- was disqualified in the third period because of injury. Maroulis (31-6) was winning the match 6-4 at the time of the default.

"I came into the match a little nervous, because it's states. I was thinking, `He's a junior and I'm a freshman, but so what? I'm just going to go out and do what I have to do to win,' " Maroulis said.

Maroulis wasn't as successful in her second match. She took a close match against Northern-Calvert's Edwin Randall into the third period before getting pinned with 31 seconds left in the match.

A few hours later in the first consolation round, Nicole Woody (103) of Arundel High became the first girl to record a pin in the state tournament when she pinned Cody Marwine of Linganore 1:57 into their match.

Trevon Jenifer (103) of Huntingtown in Calvert County advanced to the quarterfinals by beating Bel Air's Sean Ellenby, 8-3, but he lost to top-seeded Will Sharbaugh of Walt Whitman in Montgomery County, 5-2. Jenifer, a senior, was born with no legs.
