COLLEGE PARK -- Devon Gillett (112 pounds), Jose Maldonado (135), two-time state champion Vince Taweel (140) and Steve Sessa (189) moved forward for Hammond, which had a half-point lead over Howard County rival Glenelg and Walkersville of Frederick County entering today's semifinals of the Class 2A-1A state tournament at Cole Field House.

Brothers Dan (119) and Matt Bichner (160), as well as teammates Brian Macoux (112) and Chris Stinnett (125) advanced for Glenelg, whose 40 points were tied with Walkersville behind Hammond's 40.5.

Liberty was in fourth place after receiving a combined five pins from semifinalists Crit Jennings (140), Nick Fenn (171), Eddie Digman (275) and state champion Brandon Gervie (189); followed by Harford Tech (fifth), with Mark Taylor (112), two-time runner-up Mike Long (130) and one-time runner-up Matt Kahl (145) still alive.

Hammond is trying to add to its storied tradition. Having won its fourth 2A-1A state duals title last month, the Bears are trying to repeat their effort of 1998, when they swept both the duals and tournament crowns.

Taweel (30-1) raised his career record to 108-7, but not without a scare. He had to escape a second-period headlock by Pikesville's George Pikounis en route to a 16-9 victory. Meanwhile, Sessa's 5-2 semifinal victory over Francis Scott Key's Luke Schuster was considered a mild upset. Schuster was coming off last weekend's 3-1 overtime victory over Gervie, who has twice beaten Sessa.

"We had some good and some bad," said Hammond coach Pedro Barbosa, whose 125-pound Zach Halper lost, 9-7, to Winters Mill's Tim Crocken. "The guys who dropped, we'll try to take them as far as we can - same as the guys who are winning."

Jeremy Keil (112) and state champion Josh Asper (145) paced sixth-place Hereford, which is wrestling with heavy hearts following the death of reserve 189-pound teammate Taylor Cunningham in a car accident earlier this week. Poly's Sammy Johnson (140) edged Atholton's Ted Johnson, 7-6, rising to 17-1 in his quest to become Baltimore City's third state champion.
