Mad River Bar & Grille

Head to this Federal Hill hot spot on a Friday night, and you'll be in for quite a party. Stop back for Sunday morning brunch, and you might not even recognize the place.

Where --1110 S. Charles St.

Call --410-727-2333

Web site --madriverbalt imore.com

Notable --High ceilings and a balcony lounge over the bar give Mad River an open feel. A back room with a pool table and big-screen TV accommodates those so inclined. Along with top-notch traditional pub fare, you'll find creative house favorites, including the famous crab pretzel. Wednesday nights, ladies eat free.

Vibe --Laid back and casual on a Saturday afternoon. Young and hopping on a Saturday night.

What to wear --Street chic. Jeans are fine, but skip the sneakers. After 11 p.m. on weekends, no hats, jerseys, baggy clothes or athletic gear.

Crowd --On any given Friday night, 90 percent college students and 10 percent 30-somethings are trying desperately to pick one another up.

Music --DJ John Webber spins Thursday and Friday nights beginning at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Kenny Der at 8 p.m.
