STATS -- The fourth-year wrestler completed an amazing turnaround at the Baltimore County tournament on Feb. 17-18, earning the title with a 5-2 victory over Patapsco's Chris Long. The 125-pound senior pinned his first opponent in 1 minute, 30 seconds; beat his second foe, 9-2; and won his semifinal bout, 4-2, in overtime. A team captain who was 10-13 as a junior, Cottrell was 21-12 after counties, having placed no higher than sixth this year.

SIDELINES -- A football defensive back, Cottrell, 18, carries a 3.5 grade point average and works as an auto mechanic for Fox Chevrolet, spending half a day in school and leaving work for practice. Cottrell went winless as a varsity freshman and won only five match- es as a sophomore, but he has never been pinned, assistant coach Rob Knudson said.
