Terps' Jackson gets NFL look

February 27, 2006|By BILL ORDINE

Former Maryland linebacker D'Qwell Jackson could wind up being one of two Terrapins taken in the first round of the NFL draft on April 29-30.

Mike Mayock, an analyst for NFL Network who has been evaluating prospects working out at the NFL scouting combine in Indianapolis, said Jackson could be selected in the bottom third of the first round.

Maryland's Vernon Davis is considered the top tight end coming out this year and a likely top-15 pick.

Jackson, 6 feet 1 and 230 pounds, is part of a deep pool of linebackers in this year's draft. He is expected to run in the 40-yard dash today, hoping to show NFL coaching and personnel staffs that he has speed in the 4.5-second range.

"He plays all over the field and he is a lot more athletic than I thought an inside linebacker would be," Mayock said.
