"Keeping it Real: Opening Communication Between Students and Parents," a workshop sponsored by HC DrugFree, a local nonprofit organization helping teenagers avoid alcohol and other drugs, will be held from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at Atholton High School.
This workshop will offer parents and teens ways to talk about a range of topics, including the factors that can lead to teenage drug or alcohol use. Protective factors, such as ethical decision-making skills and time management, will also be discussed.
Teens are encouraged to attend with their parents. Marcy Leonard, principal at Atholton High School, will lead the discussion.
Admission is free, and registration is not required.
HC DrugFree's "Teen Job & Opportunities Fair 2006" will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. March 18 at Long Reach High School. All Howard County high school and college teens are invited to attend.

Thompkins quintet to perform Thursday
The Greg Thompkins quintet, featuring tenor sax virtuoso Greg Thompkins of Baltimore, will perform Thursday in the First Thursday Jazz Set sponsored by the Friends of the Baltimore-Washington JAZZfest and the Town Center Community Association.
The concert will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Historic Oakland, 5430 Vantage Point Road. Door prizes and a cash bar with happy hour prices are planned.

Seeking candidates -- Wilde Lake Community Association is seeking candidates for five seats on its village board and one seat on the Columbia Council.
