Mildred E. Stefansson, a retired college secretary and music lover, died Saturday at Charlestown Retirement Community in Catonsville. The former West Baltimore resident was 97 and had dementia.

Born Mildred Elizabeth Harvey in Baltimore and raised on Hollins Street, she attended Western High School.

During the Depression, she helped support her family by working as a dental assistant. In the 1950s, she was a loan department secretary at Provident Bank. She also worked briefly as a chemical company laboratory assistant before taking a secretarial job in 1965 in the Catonsville Community College library. She retired in 1975.

"She was a volunteer Red Cross nurse's aide at Bon Secours Hospital during World War II and was particularly proud of that," said her daughter, Mildred E. "Steph" Stefansson of Towson. "She was also a big believer in education because she felt inferior for having never gotten her high school diploma. So, she made sure that I went to the Samuel Ready School and my brother to McDonogh School," she said.

A resident of Charlestown since 1985, she had enjoyed playing classical, popular and Broadway show music on her piano and singing. An alto, she performed solos and had been a choir member at several area churches, including Second English Lutheran Church, for many years. She had been a member of Christian Temple in Catonsville and its choir.

"She was known to all for her old-fashioned kindness and courtesy," her daughter said.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. tomorrow at Our Lady of the Angels Chapel at Charlestown, 711 Maiden Choice Lane.

Also surviving are her son, David R. Stefansson of Kailua, Hawaii; a brother, Edward B. Harvey of Essex; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her marriage to Ragnar Stefansson ended in divorce.
