Playing for a share of the Carroll County girls basketball title, Brianne Sims scored 11 points and Cassie Cooke added 10 as visiting Westminster built a double-digit lead in the first quarter and cruised to a 52-35 win over Francis Scott Key last night.

The Owls (13-7, 5-1 county) tied Winters Mill for the championship, which is based solely upon record. Westminster topped Winters Mill, 67-61, in the teams' only meeting in December.

Bethany Bachtel scored a game-high 13 to lead Key (8-14, 4-2).

Westminster used its full-court press to build a 13-3 lead in the first five minutes, then extended it to as much as 24 by holding the Eagles without a field goal for 10:21 in the second half.

"We hit some shots that we normally don't hit at the beginning of the game, and that kind of got us into our offense," said Owls coach Jerry Georgiana. "We got some nice looks."

Glick takes leave

Mike Glick, who has coached the boys basketball team at Archbishop Spalding for the past seven years, has taken a leave of absence from the school, athletic director Lee Dove said.

Glick will not coach the Cavaliers this weekend in the 35th Baltimore Catholic League Tournament at Loyola College.

"It's a personal matter, and we met with Mike last week," Dove said. "Mike has some personal things we're dealing with and we've asked him to step back for now to let him straighten things out. We asked him to take a leave of absence and he agreed."

Glick has compiled a 167-82 (.671) record in seven seasons and has coached a number of standout players, including Rudy Gay (Connecticut), Will Bowers (Maryland) and Derrick Snowden (Villanova).

Assistant coach Ralph Burley will coach the team this weekend.
