A Virginia man died when he lost control of his tractor-trailer on the exit ramp from northbound Interstate 95 to westbound Interstate 195 early this morning, officials said.

John William Dickens, 61, of 1777 Farmers Market Road in Hillsville was pronounced dead at the scene in the accident that occurred about 1:42 a.m., Maryland State Police said.

According to authorities, the 2001 Freightliner tractor-trailer driven by Williams overturned and slid on its side for several feet before striking a guardrail and the I-195 overpass, coming to rest several feet below on the shoulder of eastbound I-195. Police said Williams was ejected before the vehicle went airborne.

Two lanes carrying traffic from I-95 toward Baltimore-Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport were closed while workers cleared the scene. The tractor-trailer was carrying a load of clothing, police said.

The crash remains under investigation.
