STATS -- Herring, a backup senior center, accepts his role and sets a positive example for the younger players. "Jake has started a few games for us, but is basically a backup who is a hard worker and positive influence on our young team," said first-year coach Andy Lazor, who starts four sophomores.

SIDELINES -- An outstanding student, Herring has a 4.2 weighted grade point average and an 1,800 score on the new SAT. He is a member of the National Honor Society and the school's It's Academic team. In addition to playing two years of varsity basketball, he ran cross country for the first time last fall. He will be a high and triple jumper on the outdoor track team for a third year this spring. Herring says he will pursue architecture and attend Catholic University, Virginia Tech or Philadelphia University.
