BSO offers a bargain to celebrate 90 years

February 08, 2006|By TIM SMITH | TIM SMITH,SUN MUSIC CRITIC

Ninety years ago this Saturday, the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra played its first concert, before an eager crowd at the Lyric Opera House. To commemorate that start, today's BSO is selling tickets at the same price the inaugural audience paid: 15 cents.

Of course, there's a slight catch or two.

First, you have to donate $90 to the orchestra's Anniversary Fund. You're limited to four tickets at that bargain rate. The tickets are for a specific list of concerts at Meyerhoff Symphony Hall. And you have only three days - Friday through Sunday - to get in on the offer.

But it's still a deal.

Donors will be given a choice of the best seats available (premier orchestra and box seats excluded) from the BSO's regular series, including several programs conducted by music director Yuri Temirkanov in March. Other options include a Symphony with a Twist concert, two Explorer programs that mix music and art, and selected pops concerts.

To get in on the anniversary action, call 410-783-8000 between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Friday or between noon and 5 p.m. Saturday or Sunday, or visit the Meyerhoff Hall box office during those times at 1212 Cathedral St.

Next week, a visual tour through BSO history will go on display at the Peabody Conservatory. Peabody archivist Elizabeth Schaaf has compiled 60 artifacts and photographs for the exhibit, starting with mementos of the first music director, Gustav Strube.

Da capo, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra opens Feb. 16 in Peabody's Bank of America Mews Gallery at 17 E. Mount Vernon Place. The gallery is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily and during evening performances. For more information, call 410-659-8100, ext. 2 or visit www.peabody.jhu.edu.
