`Wallace & Gromit' cleans up in animation awards

Wallace & Gromit: the Curse of the Were-Rabbit cleaned up Saturday at the 33rd annual Annie Awards.

The movie earned best animated picture honors, along with kudos for, among other categories, animated effects, character animation, music in an animated feature , character design in an animated feature (creator Nick Park), directing in an animated feature (Park, Steve Box), and voice acting in an animated feature (Peter Sallis, who voices Wallace).

Armstrong, Crow call it off

Lance Armstrong and Sheryl Crow have split, the couple announced in a joint statement Friday night.

The seven-time Tour de France champion and the rock star announced their engagement in September. It would have been her first marriage and his second. He has three children from a previous marriage.

Writers Guild Awards

The writers of Brokeback Mountain won best adapted screenplay Saturday night at the 58th annual Writers Guild Awards.

The screenplay was written by Larry McMurtry and Diana Ossana and based on a short story by Annie Proulx.

The writers of the ensemble drama Crash won for best original screenplay. The screenplay was written by Paul Haggis and Bobby Moresco.

In other awards, the ABC television show Grey's Anatomy won the writing award for a new series; Larry David, writer and star of HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, won for best writing in a comedy series and the writers for ABC's Lost were honored in the dramatic series category.

Clarkson derides her movie

Kelly Clarkson was less than thrilled with her 2003 movie musical From Justin to Kelly , and she wants people to know that she had no choice in the matter.

"Two words: Contractually obligated!" the first American Idol winner told Time magazine for its issue on newsstands today.

"I knew when I read the script it was going to be real, real bad, but when I won, I signed that piece of paper, and I could not get out of it," said the 23-year-old singer, whose second album, Breakaway, earned her Grammy nominations for best pop vocal performance and best pop vocal album.

Younger Penn eulogized

Celebrities turned out to mourn actor Christopher Penn, Sean Penn's younger brother, who was in Reservoir Dogs and Footloose, at his funeral Saturday.

Among those in attendance, according to the New York Post, were Penn and his wife, Robin Wright Penn, Jack Nicholson, James Gandolfini, Charlie Sheen, Tim Robbins, Tom Sizemore and Robert Downey Jr.

Christopher Penn was found dead Jan. 24 in Santa Monica, Calif. The cause of death was ruled inconclusive.
