Seniors invited to luncheon Feb. 17

Wilde Lake senior residents are invited to a luncheon sponsored by the Wilde Lake Community Association at 11:30 a.m. Feb. 17 at Slayton House on the Wilde Lake Village Green.

A pianist will entertain during lunch, and "Name That Show Tune" will be played.

The cost is $5. Reservations are required by Friday.

Red Cross cancels planned blood drive

The Red Cross blood drive sponsored by Town Center Community Association and scheduled for Thursday at Historic Oakland has been canceled by the Red Cross.

Belly dancing -- Mia Naja al Sephira is offering "Belly Power" belly-dance lessons for advanced beginners and intermediate students ages 14 and older at Slayton House on Wilde Lake Village Green. Three six-week sessions are being offered. The first session, which is in progress, runs through Feb. 28; the second runs March 7 through April 25 (except March 21 and April 11); and the third runs May 2 through June 9. The cost is $84 a session or $15 a class for drop-ins. Columbia residents receive a 10 percent discount. Classes will not be prorated. The class is sponsored by the Wilde Lake Community Association. Salima Aza is teaching Egyptian cabaret-style belly-dance classes through Feb. 28; March 7 through April 25 (except March 21 and April 11); and May 2 through June 9. 410-730-3987.

Ballroom dance -- The Howard County Department of Citizen Services' Office on Aging will sponsor a class in ballroom dancing during which dances can be done without partners. The class, which will cover the waltz, foxtrot, rumba, cha-cha and swing dancing, will be led by Carol Jorgensen of Two Left Feet Dance. Participants are asked to wear leather or smooth-soled shoes; no sneakers are allowed. The program, which runs for six weeks, will be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. Wednesdays, starting this week, at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way. The cost is $29. 410-313-7213.

Scrabble -- Slayton House is offering Scrabble from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. The free activity is for ages 18 and older. Coffee will be served. Valentine's party -- Children ages 2 to 5 are invited to celebrate "Wilde Valentine's Day!" at Slayton House. The event, which includes face- and hand-painting, a Valentine exchange and other activities, and a snack, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Feb. 14. The cost is $5 a child. Legal screening -- Attorney Stephen R. Elville will be at the Bain Center for the 60 Plus Wills and Legal Screening Program from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Feb. 15. Services include simple wills, powers of attorney, living wills, small estates and deed changes. The program is open to Howard County residents ages 60 and older. The cost is on a sliding scale. Basket bingo -- The Atholton High School Music Boosters will hold their third Longaberger Basket Bingo at 7 p.m. Feb. 25 in the cafeteria of the school, 6520 Freetown Road. Doors open at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 in advance and $20 at the door, and include 20 regular bingo games (three cards per game.) Extra cards can be bought.
