Trains of the past

The lowdown -- Lack of snow got you down? The Hagerstown Roundhouse Museum still shows its wintry spirit with "The Trains of Christmas" display. Track the sights and sounds of Christmases past and present with 23 trains running on a four-tier, O-gauge railroad layout.

If you go -- The display is open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. every Friday, Saturday and Sunday through Feb. 26. The Roundhouse is at 300 S. Burhans Blvd. (U.S. 11). Admission is $4 for adults, 50 cents for children 4-12 and free for children younger than 4. Call 301-739-4665 or go to roundhouse.org.

Race of the penguins

The lowdown -- Run, walk or waddle your way through the Penguin Pace 5K race Sunday. The 3.1-mile course will encompass a scenic route through Columbia neighborhoods. Amenities for racers include a sweatshirt and a brunch catered by the Elkridge Furnace Inn. Awards are given to the top male and female participants overall and the top male and female participants in various age groups.

If you go -- Race begins at the Bain Center, 5470 Ruth Keeton Way, Columbia, on Sunday. Be ready to run by 7:45 a.m. Entry fee is $28. Race-day registration begins at 6:30 a.m. Call director Arleen Dinneen at 410-313-7213 for more details.

Tour historical sites

The lowdown -- Enjoy a self-guided tour of Mount Vernon's historic churches on Sundays. Various churches in the area will be open for tours every Sunday beginning this week. Church tour locations will rotate weekly. Knowledgeable guides at each site will discuss the buildings' unique characteristics and architecture.

If you go -- The tours are each Sunday starting at 1 p.m. and ending at 2:30 p.m. Locations vary -- visit mvcd.org/pdf/2005_churchtourbrochure.pdf for specifics.
