The skinny on local clubs

The Venue

The Recher Theatre

Since 1999, the Recher Theatre has brought local and national bands to downtown Towson. With a capacity of 700, it's big enough to host renown acts in a fairly small space. The result is an intimate, if sometimes jam-packed, setting.

Where --512 York Road, Towson

Call --410-337-7178

Web site --rechertheatre.com

Notable --The Recher is far more concerned with music than decor. Its "mood lighting" consists of faux flame lamps (scraps of fabric blown by minifans) affixed to the walls. The sound system is solid and can get pretty loud, depending on the band.

Vibe --Smokey and a little grungy, but plenty of fun.

What to wear --Put on clothes you don't mind washing the next day. The accidental beer spill is hard to avoid in such close quarters, and you'll usually come out smelling like an ashtray.

Crowd --Includes all ages, from high schoolers to retired music lovers.

Music --Coming concerts include Fools and Horses, Jimmie's Chicken Shack, Opeth, Brothers Past, Steel Pulse and Mickey Cuchiella.
