Avoiding the pitfalls of poor vendor management begins with taking inventory of your current vendors' service menu and costs as well as comparing that with human resources needs. Dis cussing your relationship and intentions may yield a new look at your account. Often "discount ed" or "improved" services appear. If you go forward with shopping, viable contenders should receive a simple, targeted request for proposal allowing for comparison of similar items and dif ferentiation points. Once you select the lucky firm, create a service level agreement that details deliverables with rebates for low marks.
