OTHER NOTABLE DEATHS

January 23, 2006

Anthony Franciosa, 77, whose strong portrayals of moody, troubled characters made him a Hollywood star in the 1950s and '60s but whose combative behavior on movie sets hampered his career, died Thursday at a Los Angeles hospital after suffering a stroke.

From his first important film role as the brother of a drug addict in A Hatful of Rain, Mr. Franciosa became known for his portrayals of complicated young men. On television, he starred in Valentine's Day, The Name of the Game and Matt Helm.

His behavior on movie productions became the subject of Hollywood gossip. The stories alleged fiery disputes with directors, sulks in his dressing room and outbursts with other actors.

William Matthew Byrne Jr., 75, the federal judge who presided over the 1970s Pentagon Papers trial of Daniel Ellsberg, died Jan. 12 at his home in Los Angeles. The cause of death was not given.

Although he worked as a federal prosecutor, he is best remembered as the Pentagon Papers judge. Military analyst Daniel Ellsberg and a co-defendant, Anthony J. Russo Jr., were charged with espionage, theft and conspiracy for leaking to The New York Times a secret study of U.S. involvement in the Vietnam War that became known as the Pentagon Papers.

Judge Byrne dismissed the case in 1973, ruling the government was guilty of misconduct.
