Jewelry classes scheduled for seniors

Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will sponsor a fused-glass jewelry class for seniors age 55 and older from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 17 at the East Columbia Senior Center, 6600 Cradlerock Way.

Participants will work with pre-cut colored glass that is fused in a kiln to create pendants, pins and earrings.

The cost is $40, including materials. A limited supply of glass is available; additional pieces are available to purchase. Registration is required.

A boutique-style jewelry class for seniors age 55 and older will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon Jan. 27 at the East Columbia Senior Center.

Participants will have an opportunity to create a wood bead and Chinese rope-knot necklace, with matching earrings. No beading skills are necessary.

The cost is $18, including supplies. Registration is required.

Country line dance classes for all levels

Howard County Recreation and Parks will sponsor Country Line Dancing I for seniors age 55 and older from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 9 through March 27, at the East Columbia Senior Center.

The class for beginners will teach basic terminology, counts, easy foot patterns and advanced footwork. The cost is $30.

Country Line Dancing II will meet from 3:30 p.m. to 4:45 p.m. Mondays, Jan. 9 through March 27.

The class for advanced beginners teaches the boot-kicking, hip-swaying extra touches. The cost is $37.

Participants should wear leather-soled shoes; no sneakers.

Draw, paint -- Howard County Recreation and Parks will sponsor a class by Carol Zika, "You Can Draw and Paint," for seniors age 55 and older, from 9 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Jan. 6 through March 10 at the East Columbia Senior Center in the east Columbia library, 6600 Cradlerock Way. Students should bring watercolors, oils, pastels or whatever materials they have. The instructor will provide direction for beginners and experienced dabblers. Dance contest -- The Columbia Association's Teen Advisory Committee is seeking performers to participate in "The Battle of the Dance," an individual and team dance contest, to be held from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Feb. 4 at Oakland Mills Community Center, 5851 Robert Oliver Place. Each act is asked to bring music on a compact disc (no explicit lyrics are allowed) and will be given five minutes to perform. The Black Fiction Book Club will discuss Bebe's By Golly Wow, by Yolanda Joe, at 1 p.m. Jan. 7. Copies of the books are available at the branch, and registration is not needed.

The Good Reads Book Club will discuss A Fine Balance, by Rohinton Mistry, at 7 p.m. Jan. 11. Registration is not needed.

"Untangling the Web," a program on Internet searching techniques using a variety of search engines, will be held at the library at 10:30 a.m. Jan. 18. Registration begins Jan. 4.

Pilates classes -- Long Reach Community Association will offer Pilates exercise classes for adults from 7:30 p.m. to 8:15 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 10 through Feb. 28, at 8775 Cloudleap Court. The cost for the eight-week session is $96, with a 5 percent discount for those living on Columbia Association-assessed property. 410-730-8113.
