CPR and first aid courses offered

Courses in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid have been scheduled next month at sites in Anne Arundel County by the American Red Cross of Central Maryland. They include:

Adult CPR, teaching emergency action principles, rescue breathing, anti-choking procedures and rescue for victims age 8 and older. It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 7, 14, 21, and 28 at Stanton Community Center, Annapolis; and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 28, Severna Park United Methodist Church, 731 Benfield Blvd., Severna Park; Cost: $40.

Adult, Infant and Child CPR, comprehensive CPR course trains for CPR on adult, infant and child victims, including rescue breathing, clearing an obstructed airway and one-rescuer CPR. The classes will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jan. 7 and 21 in Annapolis and Jan. 28 in Severna Park. Cost: $45.

Adult CPR and First Aid Basics, featuring rescue breathing, how to clear an obstructed airway and one-rescuer CPR on victims age 8 and older. Course includes first aid basics on how to treat severe bleeding, burns, fractures, shock and sudden illness. The course will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Jan. 14 and 28 in Annapolis. Cost: $45.

Medical center offers yoga classes

Anne Arundel Medical Center is offering the following yoga classes:

Beginning Yoga, the basics of Hatha yoga, 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays, or 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursdays.

Continuing Yoga, an intermediate class, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesdays.

Children's Yoga, an introduction to yoga for children ages 6 to 11, 11:45 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Saturdays this month and January.

Mommy and Me, which covers postpartum issues in strengthening the pelvis, abdominal muscles and core alignment, 9:30 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. Fridays.

Therapeutic Yoga, which covers comfort levels, breathing exercises and focus, 5 p.m. to 6 p.m. Mondays, 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesdays, and 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Thursdays.

Prenatal Yoga, designed for expectant mothers (all trimesters are welcome; physician's consent required), 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. Saturdays.

Classes are $10 each and will be held on the second floor of the Sajak Pavilion.

Harbor Hospital has support groups

Harbor Hospital of Baltimore offers the following support groups:

Adult Day Care Center: medical day care for frail, elderly and mentally handicapped adults, 7 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. 410-350-8260.

Lung Cancer Support Group: for lung cancer patients and their families, 7 p.m. the first Tuesday of the month, LifeResource Center Library. 410-350-3163.

Harbor Hikers: informal walk-on-your-own program for people seeking heart-healthy exercise, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m., with free blood pressure screenings from 8 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. every Tuesday, the Centre at Glen Burnie.

Marley Milers: informal walk-on-your own program, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. daily at Marley Station mall.
