Barbara Exum, 78, Howard teacher, credit manager

Barbara Exum, a retired credit manager who lived in the Howard County community of Guilford, died Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital after suffering a heart attack. She was 78.

Born Barbara Credelle Moore in Guilford, she was a graduate of Lakeland High School in Prince George's County. She attended Morgan State University.

In the early 1950s, she was a substitute teacher in the Howard County schools and was later a credit manager at a Montgomery Ward store in Laurel.

Mrs. Exum organized an annual Thanksgiving dinner for patients at Springfield State Hospital. She was a past president of the Guilford Elementary School Parent-Teacher Organization and a den mother for the Guilford Cub Scouts.

She was also a Democratic elections judge.

The Harriet Tubman Foundation honored her this year with a certificate of appreciation for her work with the children of Howard County.

Services will be held at 11 a.m. tomorrow at the First Baptist Church of Guilford, 7405 Oakland Mills Road, where she sang in the choir and was chairwoman of the food bank.

Survivors include her husband of 56 years, Daniel Exum, a retired employee of the George Hyman Construction Co.; two sons, Keith Exum of Sykesville and Jeffrey Exum of Essex; a daughter, Jacqueline Exum-Petty of Columbus, Miss.; a sister, Leola Dorsey of Jessup; and three grandchildren.
