The Mount St. Mary's men's team lost to Akron, 74-61, in the opening round of the San Juan Shootout at Mario Morales Coliseum in Puerto Rico yesterday.
The Zips (4-2) used a 10-2 run to open the second half and take control of the game. Senior Landy Thompson scored a season-high 20 points to pace the Mount (1-7) in the loss.
A three-pointer by Kiel Butler with 6:03 left in the first half cut Akron's lead to 23-21 after the Zips opened the game with an 8-2 run. Akron scored the next eight points to take a 10-point lead. The Mount's Gus Durr hit a three-pointer at the end of the half to cut the deficit to 38-31.
Thompson scored 17 of his game-high total in the second half to lead the Mount (1-7). He added seven rebounds and five assists in the game.
Women
Oral Roberts 94, Mount St. Mary's 78 -- Freshman Brianna Gauthier (St. Mary's) had 14 points and eight rebounds as the Mount (3-4) lost to the Golden Bears (5-4) in the first round of the Fun in the Sun tournament in Playa del Carmen, Mexico.
St. Bonaventure 57, Navy 48 -- The Bonnies (6-2) held the host Midshipmen (5-4) scoreless over a stretch of 6:28 at the end of the first half and start of the second half.
Towson 67, Kennesaw State 52 -- Sophomore Jamell Beasley had a career-high 14 points and nine rebounds for the host Tigers (4-2).
