Mark Lunar New Year at celebration Jan. 21

The Howard County Department of Recreation and Parks will present a Lunar New Year Celebration, with arts, crafts and a performance by storyteller Linda Fang, from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at Elkridge Landing Middle School, 7085 Montgomery Road, Elkridge.

The Howard County Chinese School will hold a fashion show, and the Johns Hopkins Lion Dance Troupe will perform.

All ages are welcome to the multigenerational event; children and youth in eighth grade and younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Admission is $10 for the performances; $5 for the craft workshops. Registration is required by Jan. 19 or until all the tickets are sold.

Helping Santa -- Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring its Christmas food drive to benefit needy families in the Elkridge area. Donations can be made through Friday at the fire hall, 6275 Old Washington Road. Winter concerts -- Mount Hebron High School will hold its Winter Holiday Concerts at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday in the school's newly renovated auditorium, 9440 Route 99, Ellicott City. The Symphonic Band, Symphonic Winds and the Dixieland Jazz Combo will perform Tuesday. The Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble will perform Wednesday. Exellent reads -- The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., will hold offer its book club, Elk Excellent Reads, twice a month to accommodate as many people as possible. Driving classes -- Mount Hebron Viking Backers will sponsor a driver education session from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. weekdays Jan. 9 to 20 at Mount Hebron High School, 9440 Route 99, Ellicott City. Students who complete the course successfully will meet the driving school requirement for obtaining a Maryland driver's license. Driving time is scheduled separately after the classroom work is completed. The cost is $375, which includes the classroom instruction and on-the-road training. Instruction will be provided by Top Driver Inc. (800-374-8373.) Students must be at least 15 years old and have a learner's permit before taking the driving portion of the course. Seniors read -- Ellicott City Seniors Book Club will discuss The Joy Luck Club, by Amy Tan, at 1 p.m. Jan. 11. Copies of the books are available at the branch. Registration is not needed. 410-313-1950.
