Roch Around The Clock

I've already had eight people guess correctly that the Orioles received pitcher Darin Blood from the Giants in exchange for outfielder Joe Carter, and I'm guessing that the total will climb before this entry is posted. I underestimated you people. I won't let that happen again.

The deal took place on July 24, 1998. One reader, Jessica, actually knew that it transpired a week before the non-waiver deadline.

Blood made such an impact with fans, the first three people to submit answers each spelled his first name differently. But at least he wasn't totally forgotten.

As I recall, Carter played fairly well for the Giants that season after appearing to be washed up with the Orioles. Blood never left the minors, but he did make a hasty exit from the organization. Borderline Hall of Famers just don't bring as much as they used to.

And speaking of the Orioles, don't believe rumors that they've invited former Ravens kick returner Jermaine Lewis to spring training, figuring he's already gotten his DUI out of the way. It's just not going to happen.
