December 17, 2005

A 16-year-old boy died yesterday afternoon after falling through ice while trying to cross a pond in Gaithersburg.

According to Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman Pete Piringer, Jose Cabrera and Kevin Wilson, both 17 and residents of Gaithersburg, attempted to cross frozen Jessica's Pond about 3 p.m. when the ice gave way and they both fell in. Workers on a nearby landscaping crew ran to their rescue, pulling both teens from the water.

Cabrera was taken to Shady Grove Hospital, where he died. Wilson suffered hypothermia and is expected to recover.
