Mary Elizabeth Bain, 74, National Guard employee

Mary Elizabeth Bain, a retired National Guard civilian employee, died of cancer Dec. 5 at the Stella Maris Hospice in Timonium. The Havre de Grace resident was 74.

Born in Baltimore and raised in Govans, she was a 1948 graduate of the old St. Paul's Commercial School in East Baltimore.

After raising her children, she was an accounting technician with Maryland National Guard in Havre de Grace, where she moved in 1968. She formerly lived in Towson and in Street in Harford County.

She retired in 1997.

She took up painting and drawing after attending classes at Harford Community College and the Aberdeen Senior Center. She also played golf with family and friends. She was formerly active in Boy Scouting in Havre de Grace.

A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Havre de Grace United Methodist Church, 101 S. Union Ave.

Survivors include a son, Edward Jerome Freed of Perry Hall; two daughters, Susan Freed Capp of Fawn Grove, Pa., and Candice Freed Powell of Havre de Grace; and five grandchildren. Her 1955 marriage to Edward J. Freed ended in divorce.
