Severna Park trips No. 5 Arundel

One statistic from last year that stayed with the Severna Park wrestling team was the 47 takedowns the Arundel Wildcats had in decisively defeating the Falcons in the teams' regular-season dual match.

The No. 13 Falcons vowed not to let that happen again last night.

Taking the initiative from the start and never letting go, the Falcons had a surprisingly easy time at home against the No. 5 Wildcats in a 42-25 win in the season opener for both teams.

The Falcons started by getting tight decision wins from sophomore 130-pounder Zach Shreve - a 7-6 win over Arundel senior Seth Fenton - and senior 135-pounder Kenny Nyczaj - 9-3 over Jacob Hayghe - to take charge.

Pins from 160-pounder Joe Shum and 189-pounder Derrick Planz, along with a technical fall from senior 152-pounder Tony Massie and a major decision by senior 145-pounder Joe Greco, helped seal the win.

Coming off a victory in the Meade Tournament, the Falcons showed again that they will contend in a deep and balanced Anne Arundel County field this season.

"It showed us we had to be tough and physical," said Severna Park coach Paul Joyce, referring to last year's setback against Arundel. "We just refused to be physically handled."
