BOYS

CROSS COUNTRY

Runner of the Year

Matthew Centrowitz

Broadneck

A sinus infection was the only thing that slowed Centrowitz in a remarkable season for the junior, who took the cross country scene by storm last fall. The respiratory problem contributed to Centrowitz's third-place outing in the elite division at Bull Run, but he refused to use it as an excuse. Instead, he channeled that defeat into motivation for the postseason, which he swept for the second year in a row. Centrowitz took home top honors at the Anne Arundel County, Class 4A East regional and state championships. He also set a course record at Dulaney when he won the Barnhart Memorial Invitational in 15 minutes, 28 seconds.

Coach of the Year

Dana Dobbs

Broadneck

With the Bruins returning five runners from last year's Class 4A state championship team, Dobbs knew that opponents would take aim at unseating them. Loyola knocked off Broadneck at both the Barnhart Memorial Invitational and the elite division at Bull Run, but Dobbs drove home the point to his runners that the postseason was what counted the most. The Bruins listened, and scored victories at the Anne Arundel County, Class 4A East regional and state championships. The county title was the program's fourth in the past six years, while the state crown was Dobbs' third -- all since 2003.

GIRLS

CROSS COUNTRY

Runner of the Year

Kelsey Hill

Severna Park

No freshman made a bigger splash on the cross country scene than Hill, a swimmer who didn't join the Falcons' varsity squad until the first week of October. Hill, who won the junior varsity race at the Knights Invite, posted four consecutive wins -- the public schools race at the Meade Autumn Classic, the Scorpion Crawl, the Anne Arundel County championships and the Class 3A East regional meet. Despite a painful hip injury that flared up at the state championships, Hill finished the race as Severna Park's No. 5 scorer.

Coach of the Year

Ed Purpura

Severna Park

With a versatile roster, Purpura had the luxury of picking and choosing the runners who gave the Falcons the best shot at winning. Savvy and knowledgeable, Purpura consistently reminded his runners that their only opponents were themselves. Severna Park won four of five invitationals (River Hill defeated a Falcons squad that rested many of its top runners at the Knights Invite) and swept the Anne Arundel County, Class 3A East regional and state championships.
