Player of the Year

Julie Hollrah

Hollrah's versatility and knack for big plays led the No. 2-ranked Gladiators (17-3) to their fourth state title in Class 2A. The last title before this season came in 2002, when her older sister, Kelly, was a standout. Hollrah, 5 feet 10, led her team in kills (3.5 per game) and digs (5.6), and was third in serving at .931. In the 2A final, a 3-1 victory over two-time defending state champion and No. 3 Liberty (17-2), Hollrah had a match-high 18 kills. Two days earlier in the semifinals, Hollrah delivered 12 kills to give her 30 in the state tournament. Winning the state title over Liberty was especially gratifying to Hollrah and the seniors who suffered a five-game loss to the Lions in the 2003 final. Glenelg was 18-0 going into that final and had not lost in two seasons.

Coach of the Year

Mike Bossom

In repeating as Class 3A state champions with 3-0 sweeps of Huntingtown of Calvert County in the final and North Carroll in the semifinals, the Eagles tied 1A state champion Williamsport for most state titles (12). It was the eighth under Bossom, the most by any coach in the 30-year history of the state tournament, and gave the Eagles a 39-1 record over the past two seasons. This year's Eagles team, which went 19-1 and was ranked No. 1 by The Sun, was not the most talented team Bossom has had, but was one of the most team-oriented.
