Howard All-county

December 14, 2005

Offensive Player

Chris Eccleston

Mount Hebron

Eccleston led the metro area in scoring for the regular season with 26 touchdowns and six points in conversions for 162 points. A repeat All-County selection, the senior carried 147 times for 1,195 yards, an average of 8.1 yards per carry, and scored 20 touchdowns. The Vikings' multi-purpose back also caught six passes for 525 yards and six touchdowns. Eccleston finished his three-year varsity career as the Vikings' career leader in total yards (4,156), touchdowns (51), rushing yards (2,886), rushing touchdowns (35) and points scored (314). He also set the single-season record for touchdowns (26) this season.

Defensive Player

B.J. Benning

River Hill

Benning, a 6-foot, 280-pound senior who is also a wrestling standout, anchored a Hawks defense that yielded 146 points in 13 games (11-2), an average of 11.2 per game. Before the Hawks' 30-21 loss to Gwynn Park in the Class 3A state semifinals, Benning and his teammates had given up 116 points, an average of 9.7 per game. Benning fought through double teams to post 75 tackles and a school-record 12 sacks, three in the Hawks' 34-28 victory at top-seeded Severna Park in the Class 3A East regional final. James Madison , William and Mary and McDaniel are among the colleges interested in Benning, who also sparkled at offensive guard.

Coach of the Year

Brian Van Deusen

River Hill

The 31-year-old coach repeats as Howard County Coach of the Year after leading the 10-year-old school to its first berth in the state semifinals and a school record for wins (11-2). River Hill also won its third consecutive county title, sharing it with Long Reach. After the Lightning defeated the Hawks, 15-14, in the regular season on a last-minute score, River Hill returned to Long Reach for a 3A East first-round game two weeks later and won, 21-13. Van Deusen, who was Howard County Player of the Year in football and baseball his senior year (1991-92) at Atholton, lost four All-County offensive players, including his quarterback, to graduation. Under the tutelage of Van Deusen, a former quarterback, junior Dan Hostetler threw 17 touchdown passes, breaking brother Ben Hostetler's school record of 16 set in 2004, and led an offense that averaged 31.1 points per game. Van Deusen has led the Hawks to a 50-15 record and three consecutive playoff berths.
