Offensive Player

Jaren Maybin

The 5-foot-10, 180-pound senior rushed for 2,466 yards and 26 touchdowns on 419 carries to smash the Comets' single-season school record of 2,009 yards by Steve Matthews in 1999. Maybin ran for 1,404 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Not coincidentally, the Comets made their first and second state playoff appearances in consecutive seasons. This year, the Comets finished as Class 3A North regional runners-up to City College. In the final three games of the season, Maybin rushed for 264 yards on 53 carries in a win over Woodlawn, 262 yards on 45 carries in a win over Carver, and 231 yards on 46 carries in the loss to City.

Defensive Player

Bryn Holmes

Although only 5 feet 9 and 162 pounds, the senior was the emotional and physical leader of an Eagles squad that finished 6-3 and ranked No. 3 in The Sun. Holmes intercepted three passes, recovered three fumbles and led his team with 110 tackles. Offensively, Holmes rushed for more than 1,200 yards and 12 touchdowns. Holmes had perhaps his best game of the season in a 14-9 win over Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference rival Loyola, as he had an interception as a defensive back, a tackle for lost yardage as a linebacker during a goal-line stand, and 180 yards rushing and two touchdowns. An All-Metro wrestler and second-team All-Metro lacrosse player, Holmes will play lacrosse at the University of Maryland.

Coach of the Year

Nick Arminio

Perry Hall

Although he returned only four starters on offense and defense, Arminio instilled in his Gators the desire to defend their Class 4A-3A Baltimore County Division crown. With the help of an offseason weight-training program and the leadership of all-around players Tim Wells and Mike Rogers, the Gators were able to do just that. Not only did they capture their second consecutive division title, but they were 10-0 -- the school's first undefeated regular season in more than a decade. The Gators reached the Class 4A North regional playoffs for the third straight year and defeated Patterson, 29-6, somewhat atoning for two previous playoff losses to the Clippers. The Gators lost the Class 4A North regional title game to Sherwood of Montgomery County.
