BOYS SOCCER

Player of the Year

Paul Schuit

Winters Mill

The senior led Carroll County in scoring with 13 goals and eight assists, but it was his versatility that made him the county's best player this season. Schuit was consistently able to read and control the midfield, then accurately feed teammates up top. On the front line, he used his stellar speed and uncanny ability to keep possession of the ball in traffic to repeatedly set up scoring chances, then routinely finished them off with either his hard shot or a header. He helped his team finish 4-1-1 in the county and 8-3-3 overall. Schuit is looking at several colleges, including Campbell, Towson and Mount St. Mary's.

Coach of the Year

Ed DeVincent

Liberty

In his 10th season, DeVincent led Liberty to a 15-0-3 record, including 5-0-1 in Carroll County, and a 1-0 win over Hammond in the Class 2A state title game. The victory gave the program its first state championship, after four losses in the semifinals. The result seemed improbable early in the season. Liberty first had to face the daunting task of replacing eight graduated starters, and then had to deal with injuries to several of its key players, including Taylor VanBrackle, Graham Rigby, Dan Crutchfield and A.J. Cherenzia.

GIRLS SOCCER

Player of the Year

Katie Hertsch

Winters Mill

It's no accident that Hertsch always seemed to be in the right place at the right time this season. Making the most of her athleticism and vast knowledge of the sport, the midfielder left her mark as the county's top all-around player by consistently taking over games. Her scoring statistics -- eight goals and eight assists -- only scratch the surface of what the senior accomplished. Three of her goals were game-winners, with two occurring in overtime. Perhaps even more than her scoring, she took pride in setting up teammates, making those around her better. She will play lacrosse at Ohio University.

Coach of the Year

Rick Harmer

Liberty

Harmer, in his second year coaching the varsity team after leading the junior varsity for four years, saw the Lions make remarkable strides this season. Following last year's 8-8 campaign, Liberty improved to 11-4-1, coming agonizingly close to knocking off eventual state finalist Middletown in the Class 2A West playoffs. Harmer, 58, knew his players well, having coached 13 of them at both the JV and varsity levels. Over the summer, players took their coach's advice to develop their leadership skills, and the lessons learned translated to a more confident and cohesive unit on the field.
