BOYS SOCCER

Player of the Year

Akira Fitzgerald

Loyola

Fitzgerald returned with plenty of confidence for his second season as the Dons' team captain, and the senior goalie used that poise to repeatedly turn away some of the top scoring threats in the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference. Fitzgerald made seven saves to anchor the Dons through a scoreless, overtime draw with Mount St. Joseph in the MIAA A Conference title game. For the season, Fitzgerald finished with 11 shutouts against 12 goals allowed, leading the Dons to a 15-2-6 record and a No. 1 ranking. He will attend Wake Forest.

Coach of the Year

Randy Dase

Towson

The Generals returned only one starter from last season, started five sophomores and were often outmatched physically. But the Generals overcame those obstacles and a 6-4-1 regular season to win the Class 3A North regional crown and a share of their second state title in the past four years. Goalie Andrew Gisriel had 10 shutouts against 10 goals allowed behind sweeper Luke Walsh. Both Gisriel and Walsh were playing their positions for the first time. The team's top scorer was sophomore Wils Alpern (10 goals, two assists).

GIRLS SOCCER

Player of the Year

Jessica Knight

Perry Hall

Gators coach Brad Kressman calls Knight the most explosive player he has coached. The senior striker thrived on challenging defenders one-on-one and beating them. She scored 15 goals in 13 games as the No. 11 Gators won the county championship and finished 11-2-1 against a challenging schedule. With exceptional speed, Knight was always a threat on breakaways, but this year she developed more of an eye from the outside, making her doubly dangerous. Even when she did not score, she drew so much attention from the opposition that it disrupted their game. Knight has committed to Richmond.

Coach of the Year

Kim Williams

Eastern Tech

In her first two seasons as Mavericks coach, Williams took a veteran team to the state final, only to lose. This fall, she developed an inexperienced group into an eager squad of youngsters who would not be denied the Class 2A crown. Not only did the No. 8 Mavericks (11-2-1) graduate a load of talent, they suffered through illness and injury early in the season. Through it all, Williams focused on building a close-knit team through activities off the field. Her efforts brought a young group together for a big finish, a 1-0 victory over defending champion Middletown.
