Robert C. Herr, 82, D.C. arborist, Navy veteran

Robert C. Herr, a retired arborist, died of complications from abdominal surgery Wednesday at Montgomery General Hospital. The Silver Spring resident was 82.

Born in Washington, he earned a horticulture degree from the University of Maryland, College Park and served in the Navy during World War II in Europe. He operated a landing craft and delivered troops and supplies to Normandy beach for the Allied invasion.

He worked for the District of Columbia government as an area street tree supervisor before his 1980 retirement.

He was a member of the Leisure World Lions Club and Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church in Silver Spring.

A Mass was offered yesterday.

Survivors include his wife of 42 years, Ruth Lanham Ashton; three sons, Joseph A. Herr of Ellicott City, Howard County fire chief, Robert C. Herr of Annapolis and Timothy J. Herr of Waldorf; three daughters, Ann M. Sharp of Glenwood, Marian D. Quinn of Fulton and Patricia J. Swayze of Pittsboro, N.C.; two stepchildren, Robert Kendall Ashton of Kensington and Mary Ellen Ashton of Anchorage, Alaska; and 14 grandchildren. His first wife of 14 years, the former Marie Gabriel Taltavull, died in 1962.
