More room for animal lovers

Best Friends, the nation's largest sanctuary for cats, dogs and other homeless animals, has added four tidy cabins to its eight cottages in Utah, all the better to house some of the 20,000 people who visit each year.

The new cabins feature a queen-size bed, bathroom and kitchenette. Guests may take a tour of the sanctuary to see some of the 1,700 animals, most available for adoption. Many animal lovers - 4,500 last year - volunteer for a day or two, walking and grooming the dogs, playing with the cats or helping out with training.

Also, cottages offer a roomy living area, bedroom and kitchen for $125 per night for two, discounted for Best Friends members to $106 April 1-Oct. 31 and $81 Nov. 1-March 31. A basic membership in Best Friends costs $25.

Located in Kanab, Utah, Best Friends is close to Bryce and Zion National Parks, which are open all year, and Grand Canyon National Park's North Rim, accessible mid-May to mid-November.
