Mount Hebron High sets holiday concerts

Mount Hebron High School will hold its Winter Holiday Concerts at 7:30 p.m. Dec. 20 and 21 in the school's newly renovated auditorium, 9440 Route 99, Ellicott City.

The Symphonic Band, Symphonic Winds and the Dixieland Jazz Combo will perform Dec. 20. The Wind Ensemble, Orchestra and Jazz Ensemble will perform Dec. 21. The snow date is 7:30 p.m. Dec. 22.

Book club to meet twice a month

The Elkridge library, 6540 Washington Blvd., will offer its book club, "Elk Excellent Reads," twice a month to accommodate as many people as possible.

The groups will discuss Blessings, by Anna Quindlen, at noon Jan. 9 and 7:30 p.m. Jan. 10. Registration is not needed. Information: 410-313-5077.

Breakfast -- The Elkridge Fire Department will hold an all-you-can-eat breakfast with Santa from 7:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. today. 410-313-4901.

Helping Santa -- Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department is sponsoring its Christmas food drive to benefit needy families in the Elkridge area. Donations can be made through Dec. 23 at the fire hall, 6275 Old Washington Road, or given to Santa and Mrs. Claus when they visit neighborhoods. Santa and Mrs. Claus will travel through Elkridge neighborhoods on a firetruck to collect canned food and wrapped gifts from noon to 9 p.m. today; and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. tomorrow, weather permitting. "Jingle Bells" will be played on the air horn of the fire engine to let neighbors know the couple is arriving; to visit with them, go to the nearest street corner. Canned food and wrapped gifts (labeled "boy" or "girl" with an approximate age) will be collected. Food needed includes sweet potatoes, sauerkraut, vegetables, gravy, cranberry sauce, desserts, butter and margarine, juices, stuffing and other boxed nonperishable items. If you wish to donate a turkey, call to have it picked up. Monetary donations also are acceptable by cash or check, made payable to the Elkridge Volunteer Fire Department, care of "Christmas food drive." Donations are tax deductible. 410-313-4901.

Driving classes -- Mount Hebron Viking Backers will sponsor a driver education session from 2:30 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. weekdays Jan. 9 to 20 at Mount Hebron High School, 9440 Route 99, Ellicott City. Students who complete the course successfully will meet the driving school requirement for obtaining a Maryland driver's license. Driving time is scheduled separately after the classroom work is completed. The cost is $375, which includes the classroom instruction and on-the-road training. Instruction will be provided by Top Driver Inc. (800-374-8373.) Students must be at least 15 years old and have a learner's permit. English practice -- The Miller branch library, 9421 Frederick Road, Ellicott City, is offering an English Conversation Club for people speaking English as a second language from 7:45 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Mondays. First-time participants must register before attending a meeting. 410-313- 1950.

Bridge, pinochle -- Kiwanis-Wallas Recreation Center is offering free, drop-in bridge sessions from 9:30 a.m. to noon Wednesdays and pinochle sessions from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesdays and Fridays.
