Navy appears hungry and ready to fatten its record.

The Midshipmen had runs of 20-2 in the first half and 14-0 in the second to rout Morgan State, 73-47, at Hill Field House last night. It was the second win in four nights over a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference team for Navy, which plays in the Patriot League, and its most lopsided on the road since February 2000.

The remainder of Navy's December schedule includes two Division III opponents, two from the Ivy League and The Citadel. Billy Lange figures to be disappointed if his team (2-4) doesn't have a winning record come 2006.

Seniors David Hooper and Matt Fannin combined for 31 points. Sophomore Greg Sprink got 14 and freshman Cliff Colbert added 12, but Navy's most meaningful work came at the defensive end, where the Bears shot 28.3 percent and went nearly 10 minutes in the second half without a field goal.

The Mids lost leading scorer Corey Johnson to a knee injury Nov. 27. He underwent surgery Tuesday and could be done for the season. In his absence, Navy is playing the point by committee.

"We lose our point guard, and we're scoring more," Lange said. "Go figure. What it is, is that we're defending better. We're pushing, and that starts with defense."

Navy was first to nearly every loose ball and out-rebounded Morgan State 51-25.

The Bears scored the game's first seven points, but Navy answered with that 20-2 spurt. When the Bears went cold again in the second half, the Mids scored 14 unanswered points, and the lead got as large as 65-34.

The 26-point spread was Navy's largest on the road since February 23, 2000, when it won by 36 at Lehigh. It was its biggest win over a Division I foe since Dec. 30, 2001, when it beat Mount St. Mary's by 39.

Having already visited Seattle, Maine and Miami, the Bears got to play a home game, but a team with seven freshmen and three in its starting lineup continued its struggles at the offensive end and fell to 0-8.
