George Lewis Scruggs, 59, postal worker, repairman

George Lewis Scruggs, a retired postal worker, died of prostate cancer Sunday at his Woodmoor home. He was 59.

Mr. Scruggs was born in Baltimore and raised in Buckingham County, Va., where he attended public schools.

He returned to Baltimore in 1971 and went to work as a furnace repairman for Exxon. Since 2000, he had been a letter carrier with the U.S. Postal Service.

Mr. Scruggs enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He was a member of Christian Life Church, where funeral services were held Wednesday.

Survivors include his wife of 37 years, the former Bessie May Jackson; a son, Lavain G. Scruggs of Baltimore; a stepson, Martee F. Jackson of Baltimore; two brothers, James Scruggs of Dillwyn, Va., and Junior Scruggs of Baltimore; two sisters, Elsie Bolden of Dillwyn and Alma Barnes of Baltimore; and five grandchildren.
