West Virginia routs UMBC

Mike Gansey scored 24 points and Kevin Pittsnogle added 18 as West Virginia beat UMBC, 82-53, last night in men's basketball in Morgantown, W.Va.

Eighteen of Gansey's points came in the first half, including six in a 12-0 first half run. The Mountaineers (5-3) hit four consecutive three-pointers to turn a 20-16 lead into a 32-16 advantage with 4:14 left in the first half.

The Retrievers (2-4) had 12 first-half turnovers and 25 overall, leading to 19 points.

Northeastern 89, Towson 67 -- Jose Juan Barea scored 27 points and had 11 assists and Bobby Kelly added 18 points to help the host Huskies (6-1, 2-0 Colonial Athletic Association) to their best start in more than two decades.

Rutgers 92, UMES 50 -- Quincy Douby scored a game-high 18 points to lead six players in double figures as the Scarlet Knights (6-1) routed the visiting Hawks (2-6).

American 80, Mount St. Mary's 60 -- The host Eagles (1-6) - led by Brayden Billbe (19 points) - outshot the Mount (1-5) 57.7 to 31.6 percent from the field in the second half.

Women

Towson 58, Drexel 51 -- Tierra Jackson and Alis Freeman each scored 17 points as the Tigers (3-2, 1-0 CAA) beat the host Dragons (2-4, 0-1) for the first time in 13 meetings.
