My uncle, Joseph Palombo, had cerebral palsy and lived at St. Barnabas in Gibsonia, Pa., a facility that houses and cares for special-needs men and women, from the age of 19. While Kris Benson pitched for the Pirates, he supported the Presents for Patients program, with Kris and Anna Benson purchasing gifts at Christmas for every resident. My uncle, forever young at heart, wanted one of those mounted singing fish that were all the rage. Sure enough, the Bensons bought it for him.

For whatever reason, Kris took a special interest in my uncle, who frequently attended games. Benson made him an honorary Pirate and presented him with a full uniform.
