St. Vincent Pallotti athletic director Steve Walker said yesterday that Jack Mead's football coaching contract would not be renewed for a fifth season.

Before going 3-6 this past season, Mead had gone 5-5, 7-3 and 9-2, earning a share of the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference crown in 2004.

On Monday, Mead said he was unaware his job was in jeopardy before being contacted by The Sun regarding an e-mail from Walker saying that he was accepting applications for the position.

"Obviously, it's a personnel matter with Jack Mead, and I am not at liberty to discuss personnel matters," Walker said. "[Principal Steve] Edmonds did inform him two weeks ago that his contract would not be renewed."

Said Mead: "I'm going to move on; they're going to move on. I'm proud of what I've done. I'm looking to turn another program around."

Those interested in the position can contact Walker at 301-725-3228, ext. 215, or at
