BOYS

Danny Whitenak, Mount St. Joseph

SPORT WRESTLING

STATS -- The 119-pound senior is coming off an All-Metro season during which he went 37-9, won the Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament and finished fourth at the National Prep tournament. Whitenak competed at 103 pounds early last season but ended the season at 112.

SIDELINES -- A B-average student, Whitenak balances his wrestling season with volunteer work in the Middle River junior leagues, giving back to the program in which he honed his skills. A talented six-string guitarist, Whitenak, 17, lists among his favorite musical artists Jimi Hendrix, Bob Marley, Led Zeppelin, Sublime and Slightly Stoopid. Whitenak's musical tastes include classic rock, hip hop, reggae and rap.

GIRLS

Samantha Cooper, City

SPORT SWIMMING

STATS -- The senior is a sprinter on the Black Knights' swim team, specializing in the freestyle and backstroke. She's also the goalie for the soccer team, although she played some on the forward line. During the spring, she plays attack for the lacrosse team and plans to play lacrosse in college.

SIDELINES -- Enrolled in the International Baccalaureate program, Cooper is an A-average student who has received a merit scholarship to Guilford College in Greensboro, N.C. She also takes three art classes and is considering majoring in art. Last summer, she taught the subject to middle school students. Cooper also won an art contest, connected to the One City, One Book program at the school, which challenged artists to depict their favorite scene from a book of short stories all City students were reading.
