Matchup To Watch

Ravens vs. Texans

December 04, 2005

Ravens' passing combination of Kyle Boller to Derrick Mason vs. Texans' David Carr to Andre Johnson

George Kokinis, the Ravens' pro personnel director, sizes up the top matchup against the Texans:

The players

Boller is 15-14 as a starting quarterback since being drafted with the 19th overall pick in the 2003 draft. In the past three games, he has connected with Mason 11 times for 163 yards and a touchdown. Mason, the team's top free-agent pickup last offseason, is tied for eighth in the NFL in receptions (60).

Carr is 15-39 as a starting quarterback since being taken with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2002 draft. He completed a season-high 12 passes to Johnson last Sunday. Johnson, a first-round pick in 2003, was a Pro Bowl selection last season.

What to watch

Boller and Carr were highly touted quarterbacks and were tutored by the same college coach, Jeff Tedford. Both have extremely live arms and have the ability to scramble and run.

Johnson has gone under the radar among the top receivers in the league. He has all the tools: size, speed, big-play capability and run-after-the-catch ability. Mason has been one of the most consistent producers in the NFL each year. He's clutch, especially on third downs, and has the ability to get open anywhere on the field.
