Man dies, firefighter injured in blaze

An 80-year-old man was killed and a firefighter was injured Friday night when a fire damaged 12 apartments in the Leisure World retirement complex in Silver Spring. Joseph M. Walsh of the 3200 block of S. Leisure World Blvd. was found dead of smoke inhalation in his second-floor apartment, Pete Piringer, a Montgomery County Fire and Rescue spokesman, said yesterday. The fire is believed to have begun in the kitchen of the apartment below Walsh's. A firefighter was trapped briefly in the burning building. He was treated at Washington Hospital Center and released. Firefighters rescued at least six individuals from their apartments and a total of 17 occupants and visitors were evacuated Friday. Damages were estimated around $1.6 million.

Baltimore City: Interstate 95

Exit to be closed for construction

State transportation workers are planning to close the ramp from northbound Interstate 95 to Moravia Road from 7 p.m. today until 5 a.m. tomorrow. The work near Exit 60 is needed to set up a new traffic pattern along the ramp, according to transportation officials. Traffic will be detoured along Exit 61, the Pulaski Highway exit, during the work.
