Ravens sign White, place Musa Smith on IR

Sixth-year RB appeared in six games with Baltimore in 2004

The Ravens added some much-needed depth to their depleted backfield on Wednesday, signing free agent running back Jamel White. Musa Smith was placed on injured reserve to make room for White on the roster.

White (5-9, 222), in his sixth season out of South Dakota, saw action in six games with the Ravens last season, gaining 82 yards on 27 carries. He signed with the Detroit Lions in the offseason but was released in September.

White has appeared in 72 games and started 16 in his career, which has included stints with the Cleveland Browns (2000-2003), Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2004) and Ravens. He has run for 1,324 yards and nine touchdowns on 349 career rushing attempts.

Smith, a third-year running back who broke his leg last November, played in the Ravens loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars on Nov. 13 but experienced continued soreness in the leg over the past few weeks. He will not play again this season.
