Benning keeps R. Hill in line for success

River Hill's B.J. Benning, a 6-foot, 280-pound senior nose guard and offensive left guard, had perhaps his best game of the season, dominating both sides of the ball in Saturday's 34-28 Class 3A East regional title victory at Anne Arundel County champion Severna Park. Benning opened holes for running back Nick Campanaro (167 yards, three touchdowns) and got into the Falcons' backfield for three sacks of Greg Zingler, the best quarterback the Hawks have faced this year.

Benning, who constantly fights off double- and triple-teams, raised his sack total to a single-season school-record of 10. With Benning in the lineup, the sixth-ranked Hawks (11-1) have gone 21-2 and won two of their three straight Howard County titles.

James Madison, Trinity, William and Mary and McDaniel are among the schools having shown interested in Benning, whose Hawks visit unbeaten Gwynn Park of Prince George's County in Saturday's state semifinal.

Others considered: Ryan Finch, Westminster, football; Yusuf Dorman-El, Dunbar, football; Kyle Brooks, City, football.
