Volunteers needed to fill out tax returns

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging is seeking volunteer tax preparers to assist seniors in filling out income tax returns next year.

The program is free and available at senior centers throughout the county. Volunteers will receive a week's training in January. Information and registration: 410-222-4464.

O'Malley center offers workshops

O'Malley Senior Center has announced these activities:

Dec. 8 and 15, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., workshop making Christmas decorations from wool and other materials. Supply fee: $8. Registration.

Dec. 9, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., computer class, "Copy and Paste Basics." Registration; class size limited.

Pascal Senior Center plans dance classes

Pascal Senior Center is planning dance classes for seniors from 1:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. Jan. 12 through March 16. The classes include African dance, ballet, jazz dance, hip-hop, liturgical dance and creative dance. Discount for seniors. Registration.

South County Senior Center will offer these activities:

Dec. 12, 12:30 p.m., diabetes support group meets to discuss fruits, vegetables and soy products in one's diet.

Pascal Senior Center announces two trips

Pascal Senior Center has announced trips for the year, including:

Dec. 8 and 9, Williamsburg, Va., and the holiday lights display in Newport News Park.

Dec. 15, concert of songs and carols at St. Matthew's Lutheran Church, Hanover, Pa. Lunch at Hickory Bridge Farm.

Participants must be 55 or older and members of the center. Information: 410-222-6682.

Seniors sought to teach life skills

The Anne Arundel County Department of Aging is seeking "volunteer grandparents" to work with children 15 to 20 hours a week. Activities include mentoring, tutoring and giving advice on life skills, with extra attention for children in Head Start, special education, shelters or family-support centers.

Other activities include reading stories, working with puzzles, and helping children learn to feed themselves and set a table, as well as learn colors, numbers and the alphabet. Volunteers must be income-eligible and at least 60 years old. Benefits include a tax-free stipend, paid training, free transportation, sick leave, lunches and medical exams.

Broadway musical -- Tickets are available for a trip from the Annapolis Senior Center to New York to see the new musical The Color Purple on April 19. 410-222-1818.

Italian classes -- Free beginning Italian classes will be offered at Brooklyn Park Senior Center. Basic verbal and reading skills, simple sentences and basic phrases will be covered. 410-222-6847.

Caribbean cruise -- O'Malley Senior Center is offering a Caribbean cruise on the Holland America line from March 25 through April 5. The cruise will visit the Bahamas, St. Thomas, Dominica, Barbados and St. Kitts. The cost ranges from $1,400 to $1,995. Full payment is due tomorrow. 410-222-6227.

Pinochle club -- A pinochle club has been formed at O'Malley Senior Center. The club plays single-deck pinochle at 1 p.m. Mondays and double-deck at 1 p.m. Wednesdays. 410-222-6227.

Prostate cancer support -- Baltimore Washington Medical Center is offering a prostate cancer support group that meets at 6:30 p.m. the second Monday of the month in the Tate Center Conference Room, 301 Hospital Drive, Glen Burnie. 410-787-4367.
